classroom-pond Yesterday we had our second field trip for this school year. We visited The Suncor Energy Fluvarium. The educational staff at the Fluvarium were very friendly and taught the children a lot about the animals living in and around the Fluvarium. The children were all excited about making a “pond” in the middle of the floor on a tarp. In the pond there were several aquatic invertebrates which the staff picked out and explained about their life cycle. Then, they looked at them under a microscope called the “micro eye”. Everyone thought this was great as usually people only get to see dead specimens under a microscope.

After that, we headed downstairs to see the animals in the stream. They have large viewing windows which show visitors the animals in their natural habitat. The kids all thought the instructor was crazy when he said we would be under water and not get wet!

But, perhaps the highlight of the entire trip was the excitement over the lady taking a frog and a toad out of their homes and letting them jump a little on the floor. She also explained the differences between frogs and toads and I have assigned that as the topic of the report my daughter needs to write about the field trip.

frogOverall it was one of the most educational, yet fun , field trips we have ever done. I highly recommend visiting the Fluvarium and finding out more info at their website www.fluvarium.ca.
